Ongoing Medical Issues – 2023

The following are the ongoing medical issues for the five elephants of Oregon Zoo, as of November 2023

Shine (Sung-Surin): 41 years, female

  • Abscess in right front foot
  • Degenerative Joint Disease
  • Traumatic amptuation — from a fight with Samson, who bit off her tail
  • Valgus deformity of right carpus

Samson: 25 years, male

  • Positive DPP test for Tuberculosis

Rose-Tu: 29 years, female

  • Positive DPP test for Tuberculosis

Chendra:  approx. 30 years, female

  • Abnormal build-up of fluid in abdomen
  • Anemia
  • Fluid discharge from ears
  • Entropion (folded eyelid)
  • Hypoproteinaemia — protein deficiency
  • Phthisis bulbi (eye defect)
  • Stereotypical behavior
  • Cracked foot (right, front)

Samudra: 15 years, male

  • Cracked nails in rear feet
  • Corneal edema in eyes
  • Pulpitis (inflammation in tusk)
