Jordan Circus Abuses Elephants

Viola and Isa are elephants traveling with Jordan World Circus which will be touring parts of Oregon soon. Some counties in our state have already recognized the harm this causes and have banned the use of elephants in traveling shows. Unfortunately, many counties have not, and traveling circuses are taking advantage of these gaps in protection.

Recently, a supporter witnessed the two elephants, Viola and Isa, during a circus stop. What she saw was heartbreaking. They were swaying back and forth for an hour, an indication of severe stress and psychological distress often seen in captive elephants. They had no visible access to water or food during that time, and their bodies showed clear signs of exhaustion and discomfort. The constant threat of a bull hook by their handlers is so sad. Watching such magnificent animals reduced to this condition is devastating.

Oregon has the opportunity to lead with compassion. We can choose to protect elephants from being used as entertainment in traveling circuses. That change begins with awareness and action from everyday people.

If you are in Salem area, please try to attend an outreach event by local organizers.

Compassion Works International also has useful information to put an end to this horrible practice.
