On Saturday, July 19th, the Oregon Zoo Foundation, the fundraising arm of the zoo is
holding its annual fundraising gala, “Zoolala”, at the Oregon Zoo.

The OZF raises millions of dollars each year, a large portion of which support the
abuse of the eight zoo elephants.

The elephants suffer from a variety of life- threatening illnesses and conditions
related to their captivity, including tuberculosis which now affects Packy, Rama and
Tusko. Packy, Portland’s most beloved elephant, has not been seen since April 16,
yet Metro and Oregon Zoo officials refuse to transfer him to a sanctuary, where he
could live the rest of his years in peace and freedom.

At the same time, Metro and Oregon Zoo officials are wasting $58 million of
citizens’ tax dollars building an inadequate elephant exhibit which will do nothing
to help the elephants regain their health.  Within the confines of the new exhibit,
they plan to start an aggressive breeding program to expand the heard from 8 to 19
more than doubling the number of elephants living lives of abuse and suffering in
captivity.
