Scientific American, the leading source and authority for science, technology information and policy for a general audience, published a March 1, 2014 editorial entitled “Free the Elephants and Orcas in Captivity“. This editorial addresses the torturous conditions of captivity which inflict physical and psychological damage on animals of such exceptional intelligence and sensitivity. The last sentence in the editorial, imploring zoos and theme parks to release confined individuals and terminate captive breeding programs, is particularly relevant to the plight of the Oregon Zoo elephants.
Scientific American is just the latest respected media outlet to acknowledge the growing body of evidence proving that elephants do not belong in captivity.
We challenge Metro and Oregon Zoo officials to read and carefully consider SA’s well stated case. We ask them to act on scientific facts and principles by releasing the Oregon Zoo elephants to the freedom of a reserve and terminating their plans to enter the captive elephant breeding trade.
